At the Nurburgring on July 9th/10th 179,000 spectators enjoyed a weekend of truck racing, Formula 3 racing and a custom truck cavalcade. Sixteen BTRA drivers lined up on the grid to compete in race 1 of the ADAC Truck Service Cup, which counts towards the British Championship. In a dramatic start Prinz Leopold veered across the track and collided with Steve Horne’s ERF, causing him to swerve into Mat Summerfield’s Seddon Atkinson which crashed into the concrete wall. After a restart, it was newly returned driver Richard Walker in the MAN who was the first British driver across the line taking second place.
The second race was another full of excitement, halted after three laps when Dave Jenkins stalled causing an obstruction. For the restart Steve Horne was pulled off the grid with tyre problems and after a quick change started from the back. Stephen Armstrong’s MAN collided with Ric Collett’s ERF and sustained brake failure – Stephen chose to do a dramatic spin off the track rather than hit the corner crash barrier at 100m.p.h! Once again it was Richard Walker who took the most British points, closely followed by Dave Jenkins. Steve Horne took third British place, holding his points lead in the British Championship. Class B driver Andrew Hardy in the Ford took 1st and 2nd positions in the races to give him joint class lead with Gary George.
The next British Truck Racing Championship’s outing is at Thruxton on August 20th /21st when French and Dutch drivers join the British teams to make it the biggest racing event in the UK. There will be show trucks as well as Porsche and Pick-up Truck racing.
